The UK is considered the best destination in the world for studying English (Study Travel magazine, December 2012). The UK has long been at the forefront of English language teaching, pioneering the best scientific methods currently used worldwide. British institutions focus on learning English through fun and participation rather than simply listening to the teacher. Classes include games, problem-solving, and discussions, and students can listen to songs, watch films, and read magazines to practice improving their English comprehension skills. Universities and colleges offer numerous English language courses to help international students prepare for study programs in the UK. Universities use the term "pre-sessional English courses" to refer to such programs. The government has announced significant changes to the English language tests accepted for visa applications, reducing the number of tests required and introducing a series of new requirements for the way the tests are administered. IELTS, the world's most popular English language test for higher education and global migration, has been recognized as an acceptable test for all UK visas that require applicants to provide evidence of their English language proficiency. UK Visas and Immigration accepts IELTS Academic, IELTS General Training, and IELTS Life Skills as proof of English language proficiency, but the purpose of a student's stay in the UK determines which IELTS test they must take. At Frontier Institute, we offer IELTS preparation programs and courses, as well as English language development programs, to prepare you for admission to British and other international universities that also require IELTS as a prerequisite for admission. School holidays in the UK are set by regional local authorities (also called local councils), which publish term-by-term dates on their websites. Schools in England and Wales typically have two-week breaks for Christmas and Easter, a six-week break for the summer, and a one-week break halfway through each of the three terms. Scottish schools have the same number of breaks, with shorter or longer half-term breaks (ranging from a long weekend to two weeks). Schools in Northern Ireland have five holidays annually. They have two short half-term breaks and miss the half-term break in the summer, but they usually have an extra two weeks during the summer. Families in the UK generally spend their school holidays getting together to celebrate festive occasions such as Christmas and Easter, go on family holidays or day trips, or plan activities for children. School holidays may also coincide with important festival dates across the UK.
The academic year in the UK begins in September or October and ends in June or July. Some courses are highly flexible, allowing for multiple start dates. The application deadline for undergraduate courses starting in September is January. There are also a limited number of undergraduate, foundation, master's, and doctoral programs that can be entered in January. Some foundation colleges offer entry to these programs on other dates throughout the year.
